In 1780 Franz Freiherr von Prandau had a small castle built, today's garden wing, which was extended in 1799 by the ground-level street section and the two side wings. The later namesake Archduke Carl Ludwig bought the existing buildings around 1864/65, but did not begin the extensive reconstruction until 1872.

 

The architect was Heinrich von Ferstel (Votivkirche, Palais Ludwig Viktor on Schwarzenbergplatz). Carl Ludwig's son, the future heir to the throne Archduke Franz Ferdinand, spent most of his childhood here.

 

During World War II, the street-side building was severely damaged and replaced by a modern office building with 8 floors and a two-story underground parking garage.
