Acquiring property: In the Slovak Republic, the impediments of the acquisition of real estate for foreigners were, in general, abolished following Romania’s accession to the EU. There are no restrictions to the acquisition of ownership for foreigners in Sovakia, with the exception of agricultural land.

Transitional provisions: During a transition period of seven years (until 30 April 2011), land which belongs to the Agricultural and Forest Land Fund, can be acquired only by Slovak persons. Apart from that, non-residents are in general entitled to acquire ownership of real estate.

Land registry: In the Slovak Republic, the legal relationships of rights to properties are registered in the land registry. Responsibility for maintaining the land registry lies with administrative authorities (Katastrálny úrad). Only with the intabulation (i.e. entry) of the property title in the land registry does the buyer actually acquire ownership of the property.
